Luxury villasin Croatia
One country, seven regions, more than a thousand islands. A specialist's overview of the Croatian coast, from Istria in the north to Dubrovnik in the south.
The country in short
Croatia has always been a coastal country. The Roman emperor Diocletian built his retirement palace on the Adriatic in the fourth century, and the coast has been receiving visitors, quietly, ever since.
What sets it apart is the sheer variety of coast within a single country. Truffle forests in Istria, Venetian stone towns in Dalmatia, a walled medieval city at Dubrovnik, and more than 1,200 islands between them.
This overview is for the traveller planning a first serious visit. It sets out what each region does best, and what a full week or a two-week itinerary can look like when it is arranged properly.

Why choose Croatia
The Mediterraneanas it used to feel
Croatia is the last stretch of European coast where a two-hour drive can still take you from a Michelin-starred restaurant in a stone hill town to a private cove reached only by boat. There is no equivalent left in France, Italy or Greece at the villa level.
The country is small enough to cover in a single trip, but distinct enough that no two regions feel the same. Guests come once to see the coastline and return the second time to a specific island.
The luxury lifestyle
Villas, boatsand long tables
A Croatian villa holiday is defined by three things: the villa itself, a boat on standby, and a rhythm of long lunches by the sea. Nothing is rushed, and the best days end with a slow walk into a stone village for dinner.
Private tenders, dedicated concierges, cellar tastings and truffle hunts are all straightforward to arrange. The country's luxury infrastructure has quietly caught up with its natural setting in the past decade.
Best beaches
Pebble, stoneand hidden coves
Croatian beaches are pebble and stone rather than sand, which is why the sea is exceptionally clear. Zlatni Rat on Brač shifts direction with the current. Stiniva on Vis is reached only by boat. Sakarun on Dugi Otok is the country's rare white-sand bay.
The most memorable swimming is not from a beach at all. It is from a mooring, at anchor above 15 metres of turquoise water, with lunch coming out of the galley behind you.
Fine dining
Michelin starsand family konobas
Croatia earned its first three Michelin stars in the past four years: Alaska in Rovinj, Noel in Zagreb and LD Terrace in Korčula. Istria in particular is now a serious gastronomic region, comparable to Piedmont for truffles and Puglia for olive oil.
Alongside the fine dining, the country's real culinary depth is in the family konoba, a small tavern, often on a farm, where peka is cooked under an iron bell for three hours. Both belong on the same trip.
Family activities
A coastline builtfor children
Croatia works well for families because the distances are short and the water is safe. Sea kayaking around the Elaphiti islands, sailing lessons in Split, and the truffle-hunt-and-lunch afternoons in Istria are all suitable for children over eight.
For younger children, choose a villa with an enclosed pool and a shaded garden. Istria and the north coasts of Brač and Hvar are gentler than the exposed south-facing coves.
Nature
Eight national parks,one archipelago
Croatia has eight national parks, five of which are on or near the coast. Plitvice's turquoise lakes and Krka's waterfalls are the famous two. Kornati, an archipelago of eighty-nine uninhabited islands, is the finest single-day sailing destination on the Adriatic.
Mljet, Paklenica and the Brijuni archipelago complete the list. A private guide can turn any of them into a day out from a villa within an hour's drive.
Local experiences
The culture belowthe postcard
The best of Croatia is in the small rituals: the morning coffee that lasts an hour, the fishermen bringing the catch in at four, the Sunday lunches that don't finish before six. A good concierge builds these into your week without ever calling them experiences.
Klapa singing in a Dalmatian stone chapel, an oyster tasting in Ston, a private tour of the Diocletian's Palace before it opens: these are the moments guests remember long after the villa.
When to visit
The country ineach of its seasons
June and September are the two quietly perfect months. Sea temperatures are 22 to 24 degrees, restaurants are open and unhurried, the light is soft, and the harbours are working boats rather than tourist crowds.
July and August are hot and social. May and October are for those who value quiet over swimming. Winter is Istria, Zagreb, and the Advent markets, an entirely different country.

Planning yourCroatian holiday
Getting there
Direct flights into Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Pula and Rijeka from most European capitals. Zagreb is the main hub for long-haul connections.
