Šibenik, UNESCOstone on the Krka
A Croatian-founded city with two UNESCO monuments and the finest position on the coast for the Krka and Kornati national parks. A specialist's guide.
The city in short
Šibenik is the rare Croatian coastal city not founded by Romans, Greeks or Venetians. Croatian kings raised it in the eleventh century, and it holds two UNESCO sites: the Cathedral of St James, built entirely without mortar, and the St Nicholas fortress guarding the sea channel.
The old town is smaller than Split's and quieter than Dubrovnik's. What makes Šibenik distinctive is its geography: a deep sea channel, the mouth of the Krka river with its national park waterfalls, and the Kornati archipelago a short sail offshore.
It is the coast's most quietly authentic city, and a serious base for two of the country's best national parks.

Why Šibenik
The authenticDalmatian city
Šibenik is chosen by guests who want a working Dalmatian city that has not been reshaped by tourism. The pace is slower than Split, the crowd smaller than Dubrovnik, and the food scene has quietly become one of the best on the coast.
It is also the most practical base on the coast for a trip built around Krka and Kornati, both of which are reached faster from here than anywhere else.
Luxury lifestyle
Waterfront villas,fortress evenings
The best Šibenik villas sit on the Zablace and Brodarica peninsulas south of the city, with private moorings and views across to the Kornati islands. D-Resort Šibenik at Mandalina brings a small pocket of resort polish to the harbour.
Evenings are typically spent walking up to the St Michael or Barone fortress at sunset, followed by dinner in the old town or at Pelegrini directly opposite the cathedral.
Best beaches
Kornati coves,and the Zlarin channel
The city itself has stone-platform swimming and small pebble bays. The proper swimming is offshore: the coves of Zlarin, Kaprije and Prvic Luka, all a short boat ride from the harbour.
Solaris and Bilice offer family-friendly pebble beaches with facilities. For the finest single day of swimming, take a private boat into the Kornati and stop at the Telascica bay.
Fine dining
Pelegrini,and the harbour restaurants
Pelegrini, opposite the cathedral, holds a Michelin star and a place among the finest coastal restaurants in southern Europe. Konoba Nostalgija in the old town and Dalmatino for classic Dalmatian dishes.
For a memorable low-key evening, drive down to Konoba Alan in Zaboric and eat outside above the water.
Family activities
Krka waterfalls,and gentle sailing days
The Skradinski Buk waterfalls at Krka National Park are the region's set-piece family day: a boat up the river from Skradin, a walk through the falls, and a return to a lunch of grilled river trout.
The Aquapark Solaris and the day-boat trips to the small settled islands of Zlarin and Prvic keep older children engaged for a full week.
Nature
Krka and Kornati,back to back
Two national parks within an hour: Krka for waterfalls and river landscapes, Kornati for uninhabited karst islands. No other Croatian coastal city sits between two national parks of this calibre.
The Krka monasteries, deeper inland, are a quieter alternative to the main waterfall boardwalk.
Local experiences
Fortresses at sunset,cathedral by daylight
A private historian-led tour of the Cathedral of St James, with time inside the roofline. An evening concert at the St Michael fortress in summer. A cellar visit at Bibich in Skradin, one of Croatia's most respected small producers.
For a properly slow day, a boat trip to Prvic Luka for lunch at Val, followed by a swim off the island's north coast.
When to visit
May through October, with a soft summer peak
Šibenik holds its atmosphere through July and August better than Split or Dubrovnik. The old town has no cruise-ship traffic and the crowds thin significantly at dinner time.
May, June and September remain the finest months for combining swimming with the national parks.
Helpful information
Practicalitiesfor Šibenik
Getting there
Fly into Split (50 min drive) or Zadar (55 min). Šibenik has no airport of its own. Private transfers are straightforward from either.
Getting around
A car is useful for national parks and beach coves. In the old town, everything is walkable. Private driver by the day for longer trips.
Where to base
Zablace and Brodarica for waterfront villas with private moorings; Solaris for resort-style stays; the old town for boutique hotels.
Krka logistics
Enter at Skradin rather than Lozovac to arrive by boat. Book the panoramic tour to reach Roski Slap and the monasteries.
Restaurants worth booking
Pelegrini two to three weeks ahead. Konoba Nostalgija and Dalmatino a week ahead in summer.
What to pack
Walking shoes for the fortress climbs, water shoes for the pebble coves, and something modestly smart for Pelegrini.
