Kvarner,the belle-epoque coast
Where the Austro-Hungarian empire came for the sea. A guide to Opatija's grand villas, the wooded islands of Cres and Losinj, and the quiet island of Rab.
The region in short
Kvarner is the strip of coast between Istria and Dalmatia, tucked into the corner where the Adriatic meets the Alps. Opatija, its main resort, has been a winter retreat for European nobility since 1844 and still carries that atmosphere.
The three big islands, Cres, Losinj and Rab, sit just off the coast, each with its own character. Losinj is the most polished. Cres is the wildest. Rab has the closest thing to a sand beach on the northern Adriatic.
Kvarner rewards travellers who like their luxury quiet, their landscapes forested, and their evenings walked rather than driven.

Why Kvarner
Elegance withoutthe crowd
Kvarner is the coast that European aristocracy discovered before the rest of Croatia was on any map. The result is a strip of belle-epoque villas along the water, a walking promenade (the Lungomare) linking the resort towns, and an unhurried atmosphere that survives even in high season.
It is the quietest of the Croatian coastal regions, and by some distance the best for guests who want to walk everywhere and drive nowhere.
Luxury lifestyle
Villa walks,sea baths, long dinners
Life in Opatija and its neighbours (Lovran, Icici, Volosko) is defined by the walking promenade, the seasonal sea baths, and the restaurants of Volosko, three of the best on the Croatian coast within a hundred metres of one another.
On Losinj, the pace shifts to sailing, aromatherapy walks in the pine forests, and quiet dinners in Mali Losinj harbour. The island has a decades-long reputation for wellness.
Best beaches
Sand at Rab,pine coves elsewhere
Rab has genuine sand beaches, the rarity of the northern Adriatic. Paradise Beach in Lopar is the best-known. On Losinj, the pine-fringed coves of Cikat Bay are the town beach; Cres offers wilder, harder-to-reach swimming spots.
The Opatija coast itself is stone platforms and small pebble bays. Guests who want to swim more than walk should base themselves on Losinj or Rab, not on the mainland.
Fine dining
Volosko village,the coast's quiet capital
The fishing village of Volosko, five minutes from Opatija, holds Draga di Lovrana (one Michelin star), Bevanda, Plavi Podrum and Nebo. Together they make Kvarner one of the finest small stretches of coastal dining anywhere in Croatia.
On Losinj, Diana in Mali Losinj and Bora Bar in Nerezine are the two names to book in advance.
Family activities
The best walkingcoast for children
The 12-km Lungomare promenade means families can walk the coast without touching a road. Kids' sailing courses in Mali Losinj, dolphin-watching (the Losinj bottlenose population is one of the best-studied in the Mediterranean), and the swimming pools of the grand hotels are all straightforward.
Cres and Rab both suit older children who want to hike, kayak or explore quiet coves.
Nature
Ucka mountainand the outer islands
Ucka Nature Park rises directly behind Opatija to 1,400 metres, with hiking trails that end back at the coast for lunch. Cres has one of Europe's last populations of griffon vultures.
A private day charter from Losinj reaches Susak and Unije, two of the most unusual small islands on the Croatian coast.
Local experiences
Sea baths, coffee,Habsburg atmosphere
Coffee on the terrace of the Hotel Kvarner or the Milenij, both original nineteenth-century establishments. A morning at the Slatina sea bath. A private guided tour of the Ambasador and the Villa Angiolina gardens.
On Losinj, an aromatherapy walk in the botanical park at Cikat, followed by dinner in a family-run restaurant in Veli Losinj.
When to visit
A shoulder-seasonspecialist's region
Kvarner is at its best in May, June, September and early October. The sea reaches 24 degrees in July, but the region's charm is in the walking weather, which is perfect from mid-April through late October.
Winter is quiet but characterful, with several grand hotels open year-round and a small Christmas market in Opatija.
